About

Spanish, b. 1977   —   Born on the island of Tenerife (1977), Yapci Ramos lives and works between Barcelona, Tenerife, and New York. She earned her Masters in Creative Documentary from the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and studied at Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts & Design London (CSM). Ramos’s work is forceful in its subtle simplicity. A multi-media artist, her diverse output is deeply invested in interactions: those that define the subject in relation to the “Other.” With a focus on abstract visual and conceptual relationships, she demonstrates an ability to capture personal moments that imply narrative depth. Ramos’s projects challenge the border of comfort between the body and society while engaging the intricate workings of both internal psychology and external expressions of identity. Ramos’s work has been exhibited in international biennials in the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa: 8ème Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie, Bamako; 2nd Trienal de Luanda; 1st Biennale Encounter of Contemporary Caribbean Art, Aruba; 7th Bienal de Sao Tomé e Príncipe; 5th Bienal de Honduras, Tegucigalpa; 9th Bienal de Artes Visuales del Istmo Centroamericano – BAVIC, Guatemala. Her work has also been shown in museums, art centers, galleries, festivals and institutions in around the world including at the CCCB Centro de Cultura Contemporánea, Barcelona; TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife; CAAM Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; Casa África, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; Galería Na Solyanke, Moscow; Catinca Tabacaru Gallery, New York; CCET Centro Cultural de España, Tegucigalpa; Musée d’histoire de la médecine, Paris; Galerie Magda Danysz, Paris; EAC Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo, Montevideo; Espacio Cultural el Tanque, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain; Mario Mauroner Gallery, Vienna. In February 2020, she was selected as artist in residence at Watermill Center – a laboratory for performance, New York. In June 2018, she was artist in residence at The Fountainhead Residency, Miami. She has been invited to the intensive performance programme at The Kaimera Lab, Belloy-Saint-Léonard, in July 2021. Reviews of her work have appeared in El País, Forbes, Paper Magazine, Wall Street International Magazine, Cools, La Vanguardia, among others.
