About

American, b. 1973   —   Born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Weinberger received her MFA from Yale University School of Art, in 2003 and BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in 1995. She lives and works in Newark, NJ. Her work relates to her Caribbean-American background and draws strongly on the complexity of heritage and identity that explores the psychology of beauty and cultural ambiguity. A five-time participant of the Jamaica Biennial held in Jamaica. Recent solo exhibitions at Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn (2019) and Long Gallery, Harlem, NYC (2020). Awarded a 2014 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. 2015 Joan Mitchell Center, Artist-in-Residence, New Orleans. 2016 Fellowship, New Jersey State Council on the Arts; 2017-2018, Project of Empty Space, Artist-in-Residence, Newark, NJ; 2019 Dawn Scott Memorial Award, from National Gallery of Jamaica and Edward M. Gomez; appointed 2019-2021 McMillan Stewart Endowed Chair in Painting, Maryland Institute College of Art; 2020 Sunroom Project Artist, Wavehill, Bronx, NY (opening May 2021); 2020 Newark Artist Accelerator Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation; included in Born In Flames, Bronx Museum and Wassaic Project Summer Exhibition, this Spring 2021.
