Shanti Grumbine

American b. 1979   —   Using drawing, printmaking, paper cutting and sculpture, I transform everyday objects by pushing them into a liminal state between the identifiable and the symbolic. During my daily walking practice, I take snapshots of neighborhoods in flux where the palimpsest of architecture and patina of time reveals a layered history. I'm particularly drawn to liminal spaces such as windows, doors, gates and walls. They make me aware of the divide between my own personal space and other spaces. They invite and share and also curate/limit access. Windows conflate image, object, space, story, and frame. I've become fascinated with the outdated decorative concrete breeze blocks found across the US and abroad. Originally designed for warm regions to keep out the sun and let in the breeze, these aesthetically pleasing and affordable architectural features now cross climates, class lines and cultures and are found in both rural and urban areas. I use them in my drawings and wall reliefs to symbolize spaces of sanctuary where what is harmful is kept out and what is nourishing can pass through. They allude to permeability, refuge, connection, beauty, and contemporary ruins. In all of my projects, the formal conventions of industry and consumer society collide with the more metaphysical aspects of knowing and believing: hands-on craft, repetition, beauty and ritual.
