Artist Meena (Sadia Fakih)

Meena (Sadia Fakih)

New York

Meena's (Sadia Fakih) work explores cultural hybridity, dismantling hierarchies, intersectionality, and the Surreal. Through assemblage, collage and object-making, she seeks to reconfigure and transform visual tropes of constructed binaries from South Asian and Western cultures. Her work expresses biomorphic, tactile, alien forms, as well as the transitional spaces that erupt when imposing identities collide. Her parents immigrated to Canada from Karachi, Pakistan in the mid 1970s. She was born in Nova Scotia and grew up in Ontario. She graduated with a BSc. Honours in Biology from the University of Guelph, and a BFA in Painting with distinction from the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary, Canada. In 2019, Meena (Sadia Fakih) received her MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and was selected for the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award for Exceptional Artistic Achievement upon graduation. She attended the Akin-Museum of Contemporary Art studio residency in Toronto, and her work has been included in exhibitions at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in NYC, Space 776 in Brooklyn, the School of Visual Arts Flat Iron Gallery and Nuit Blanche in Toronto. Her group exhibition work has been featured in Artnet and Hyperallergic.
