Artist Negin Sharifzadeh

Negin Sharifzadeh

Brooklyn, NY, USA

I am a cross-disciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. I am fascinated by the mechanisms, patterns, and interplay of systems ranging from biological and emotional to speculative and surreal. Born in Iran the year of the revolution, and growing up in the war that followed, fluxed was baked into my world view. I was raised steeped in the history and culture of the region. History was a force that erupted daily life. My work began with finding the history within personal stories, how these broad movements impacted the people who lived through it. But I have increasingly moved towards questioning how we create those larger stories of identity through our histories of art and culture. In the world we have narrated, how can we break down the false binaries, such as East and West that has led us to such upheaval. This background made me interested in World Art History, the stories that examine more on the similarities of parallel movements and the inter-influence we had and we continue to have collectively on each other. Portraying a more nuanced view on art history and reimagine its narrative. I have explored these themes through the mediums of sculpture, stop-motion animation, live-action short films and more recently, photography. I have had solo exhibitions and performances in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Florence, Melbourne, and Tehran, and have been part of numerous international group exhibitions and festivals. In New York I have shown work at A.I.R. Gallery, Frieze Art, Thomas Erben Gallery, Soho20Chelsea Gallery, MANA Contemporary, The Bullet Space, The New York Book Art Center, Queens Museum of Art, Alwan Center for the Arts, Project for Empty Space and Local Project. My animated films have won numerous awards, including Best Experimental Film at the 2012 Williamsburg International Film Festival and Best Animation at the 2012 Crown Heights and Best Short Film at 3rd-i Film awards and have been shown in international festivals. My work has been reviewed in the Huffington Post, the New York Times, Art Report, Fine Art Globe, The Frontrunner New York Magazine, Herald Sun, Global Voices, Artribune, Art World Women, , Art View, also including TV interviews on Voice of America, and BBC Persian Services. I received my BFA in Sculpture from Tehran University in Iran in 2002, and my BFA in Performing Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010.
