American, b. 1981 — Mollie McKinley’s interdisciplinary work explores relationships between the body and nature, often through photographic tableau performances in remote landscapes. Her practice seeks to physically embody the mysterious and immaterial aspects of the natural world. She works with sculptural materials such as salt, glass, and earth, pursuing alchemical transmutations of time, erosion, and light. Her first large-scale earthwork, "Dune / Shift," was commissioned by the Newburgh Sculpture Project, and opened in July 2019. Her work has been exhibited at Pioneer Works; Independent Curators International; the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art; Anthology Film Archives; the MoMA Pop Rally; Baxter Street/CCNY; Field Projects; SPRING/BREAK Art Show; the NY Art Book Fair at P.S.1; Momenta Art; Ethan Cohen Fine Arts; Anna Kustera Gallery; Dimensions Variable Gallery; Matteawan Gallery; and others. She studied photography at Bard College. She is a former co-director of The School of Making Thinking, and was a 2018 Fellow at the Creative Glass Center of America/Wheaton Arts. She was the visiting teaching artist at the Dia: Beacon for 2018-2019, and is currently an MFA candidate in sculpture and glass at Alfred University.
