Artist Maya Ciarrocchi

Maya Ciarrocchi

Bronx, NY, USA

Maya Ciarrocchi is an interdisciplinary artist working across media in drawing, printmaking, video, and performance. Her projects center on the excavation of vanished histories, themes rooted in queerness, and the experience of her Ashkenazi ancestry. Ciarrocchi investigates how displacement writes itself into generational consciousness by layering redrawn maps and architectural renderings of disappeared and imagined places. The resulting compositions construct new, fantastical spaces that offer possibilities for healing and remembrance. Ciarrocchi's previous career as a dancer/choreographer and theatrical designer allowed her to create work in various formats, from performance in site-specific locations to large-scale projections in traditional and non-traditional theatrical venues. These past experiences inform her current multi-disciplinary studio practice. Her work includes a diverse range of palettes, including monochromatic prints, drawings, videos, and vibrantly painted color abstractions. The scale of these projects varies from small format to large public artworks and installations. Ciarrocchi's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she has received residencies and fellowships from the Bronx Museum of the Arts (AIM), LABA: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (Swing Space), MacDowell, Millay Arts, New York Artists Equity, UCross, and Wave Hill (Winter Workspace). She received a 2021 New York City Department of Cultural Affairs City Artist Corps Grant, a 2020 BRIO Award from the Bronx Council of the Arts, a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, a Film/Video Grant from The Jerome Foundation, and funding from the Puffin Foundation and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. In addition to her studio practice, Ciarrocchi has created award-winning projection designs for dance and theater. Her interdisciplinary project Gender/Power, which she co-directs with her collaborative partner Kris Grey, has been presented at Gibney, the Invisible Dog Arts Center, Jack, and Smack Mellon. Gender/Power has received funding support from the MAP Fund, the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, the Bay and Paul Foundation, and the Franklin Furnace Fund. The project has been awarded residencies from the Baryshnikov Arts Center and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Process Space. Gender/Power was a participant in the Moving Towards Justice Cohort at Gibney. Ciarrocchi earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY, and a BFA from SUNY Purchase, Purchase, NY.
