Artist Kerri Ammirata

Kerri Ammirata

Ridgewood, Queens, USA

Kerri Ammirata creates sculptural paintings that explore the complexities between the mundane and the sacred; deconstructing the iconography and ritual between Catholicism, Christianity, and American secular spiritualism. Combining both woodcarving and painting techniques, she creates her own symbolic language through the combination of grids, religious altarpieces and architecture, triptychs, sacred geometry, snakes, megaliths (i.e. dolmens, passage tombs), petroglyphs, and graveyards. Each surface, either wood or build up paint, is carved and shaped by hand, adding ritual and history to each piece. Ammirata is a Queens-based artist born in Long Island and partly raised in the Midwest. She earned her MFA from Boston University in 2010 and a BA from Anderson University in 2006. She had her first solo show ‘Deep in the Knowing’ at Space776 in Brooklyn in 2018. She is the recipient of the following awards and residencies: The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, New York (2019), Ne'Na Contemporary Art Space/Monfai Cultural Center Residency, Chiang Mai, Thailand (2019), NYCT Cultural Advocacy & Equity Program, New York (2015); Vermont Studio Center Clowes Full Fellowship (2012); HUB-BUB Full Fellowship, Spartanburg, South Carolina (2010-2011); and Chautauqua School of Art, Full Scholarship (2005 and 2006).
