American, b. 1984 — Katy G Collier works through multiple disciplines, including printmaking, drawing, quilting, and text. Her work privileges labor over all other notions, such as the notion of the abstract, the notion of the narrative, etc. The centering of labor is a political choice that extends from a history of social movements that have attempted to break poisonous binaries. By referencing labor Collier's work casts doubt on the notion that a boundary exists between craft, design, decoration, and art. She says, "I know this to be true because I experience it first hand when covering myself in blankets that my grandmother crocheted. My labor is the devotion to this experience." Collier holds a BA from Whittier College and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received a full-tuition scholarship. In 2012, she received a grant for a Studio Residency at Women's Studio Workshop through the NEA. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States, including at the Hyde Park Art Center, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, and GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art.
