Artist Katie Bell

Katie Bell

New York

American b. 1985  —  Katie Bell paints with the gesture and texture of the everyday. She searches for material on Craigslist and picks it up from someone’s living room and goes to salvage yards to sift through piles of discarded objects. Common building materials found in these mundane places become the raw material to tie, saw, cut, throw, stack, and coerce together. These materials act as the palette to construct sculptural paintings. Bell’s work is often site-specific and uses the wall itself as the painting’s support. Bell was born in Rockford, Illinois. She received her BA from Knox College and her MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. Bell has shown her work at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, St. Gaudens National Historic Site, Locust Projects, Okay Mountain Gallery, and the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. She was in residence at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation’s Space Program, and awarded a NYFA fellowship in painting. Bell has an upcoming solo project at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, NY.
