Artist Kate Clark

Kate Clark

Brooklyn, NY, USA

Kate Clark's hybrid sculptures invite the viewer to have an instinctive and primal reaction that examines the essences of our humanity. The wild animal hide she uses has a unique energy and presence. Clark shaves sections of the animal's skin to reveal porous and oily features similar to our own. Stitched over a hand-sculpted human face, the material quality of the skin brings believability to the final sculpture: they are portraits we relate to. Mankind dominates animals while at the same time we love, revere and celebrate them. We identify as with animals through both our connection with and separation from them. Recognizing these contradictions, Kate's sculptures skew animals’ designated classifications, encouraging the viewer to contemplate their individual identity, and to celebrate the hybridization and broadening definitions of identity, gender and ethnicity. The fusion of human and animal Clark creates suggests our human condition is fully realized when we acknowledge our current state and our natural instincts. She emphasizes the characteristics that differentiate us within the animal kingdom, and, importantly, the ones that unite us. Kate Clark lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
