Salvadoran, b. 1967   —   Karlos Cárcamo's work reflect his interest in abstraction and art history seen through the prism of Urban Culture. Utilizing a conceptual and formal approach informed by the constructed nature found in various genres of Urban Culture that include Hip Hop, DJ’ing, and graffiti. He makes paintings and sculptures that incorporate ideas such as sampling and graffiti tagging as a means of examining abstractions legacy of self referentiality, artistic purity, and exclusion. While re-contextualizing high and low cultural references that subvert aspects of our everyday life within its pictorial language. Karlos Cárcamo (b. 1967) is originally from San Salvador, El Salvador, and was raised in Jamaica, Queens, NY. Since earning his MFA from Hunter College in 2000, the artist’s work has been exhibited in various venues throughout New York City, including Artists Space, The Brooklyn Museum, PS1 Center for Contemporary Art, El Museo del Barrio, PS122 Gallery, Longwood Art Gallery, Queens Museum of Art, and Bronx Museum of the Arts, Museo de Arte de El Salvador, Jersey City Museum, Hionas Gallery, and Collar Works. His work is in a number of private and public collections, including El Museo del Barrio, Red Bull Corporate Art Collection, Deutsche Bank, Museo de Arte de El Salvador, Robert S. Wennett and Mario Cader-Frech Foundation and Museo Reina Sofia, Spain. Cárcamo lives and works in Beacon, NY.
