Artist Joshua Tarplin

Joshua Tarplin

London, Greater London, USA

American, b. 1997   —   Joshua Tarplin (he/him, American, b. 1997) is a photographic artist. He holds degrees in studio art and in the history of art from Yale University. Josh has exhibited nationally and internationally, been shortlisted for and won awards, and publishes books. Recently he has shown at Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center (Budapest, Hungary), Landskrona Foto Festival (Landskrona, Sweden), Fotofestiwal (Łódź, Polad), (Lisbon, Portugal), Plaxall Gallery (New York, USA), and Texas Tech University School of Art (Lubbock, USA). His background in art history and visual theory inspired his obsession with the life of images, their lineages and functions, and the untraceable code through which they influence what we know by guiding how we imagine. Josh often recycles art history and his own images repeatedly in search of potential. He also enjoys highlighting queerness lying dormant in conventional imagery. In mixing together or disregarding types, tropes, and expectations he aims to celebrate subjects with a surreal, empathetic vision. Currently Josh lives in London with his partner and cameras Wallace, Camille, and Frank.
