Artist Jiawei Zhao

Jiawei Zhao

b. 1989  —  I am a photo-based artist practiced with elements of sculpture and installation. My work is impacted by personal experience, which I initially came to the States for education and have been here for eleven years. In fact, there are 360,000 young Chinese people currently studying at academic institutions in the U.S., and they are not staying here for immigration. Chinese students are sandwiched between Chinese culture and American culture, and they have been building up their own cultural identity. I question Chinese students have been figuring out comforts and community through spatial and photography relationships. I create research involved installations including images of architectures, which question if Chinatown architecture reinforced the sense of connections to the culture we grew up with and if academic institution buildings offer us space. I use online images and my own images to highlighting subjectivity and objectivity, and I flaner around virtual and real space. I issue critical points concerning “temporality” through intertwined back and forth of fake and real spatial relationships among photography, architectures, and obfuscated realities. Either China or the U.S. won’t be a good fit for them, I will create an actual architecture including imaging process for their own comforts and community. Jiawei Zhao is a Chinese-born visual artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He came to the U.S. at age 18 to attend college, and have been here for eleven years since then. Jiawei was an accountant, and he received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2014 from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 2018, Jiawei received his MFA Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute, where he was awarded $50,000 Merit-based scholarship. Jiawei organized and curated the second-year MFA photography candidates’ exhibition when he studied at Pratt. His two pieces of work are collected by Kala Art Institute, where he finished a residency in January 2019. Jiawei has participated in some group exhibitions held at non-profits galleries since 2016 in NYC and California. His work has been selected for the 56th Annual Juried Competition at the Masur Museum of Art. Jiawei just finished residencies at MASS MoCA and ChaShaMa North in Spring 2019. Jiawei’s work is featured in Volume 9 of FOA print and digital publication, which was released on May 28, 2019. He was awarded Honorable Mention by Woodstock AIR program of The Center for Photography at Woodstock recently in 2019.
