Jennifer Protas

Amsterdam, Netherlands

American,   —   I use photography, drawing, and projections simultaneously to infuse light and (the illusion of) 3-dimensional depth into my 2-dimensional pieces. My intention with these pieces is to chronicle a narrative, yet keep it permeable and unfixed. My projection installations use multiple, overlapping horizon lines to explore the complexity of shifting perspectives and our will to create congruity. Concepts such as memory, simultaneity, and perception are recurring themes in my work, and the investigation of what constitutes the ‘right’ measure of order with disorder, remains at the core of what I do. Since 2015 I’ve concentrated primarily on collage and drawing, a re-discovery that began out of necessity when I ran out of resources for large sculptures and installations. I use layers of infinitely varied 2-dimensional material to build up surfaces and allow room for the unexpected alterations that occur with their juxtapositions. As with my garbage sculptures (1996- 2001) and Flatworks (2003 -2007), the collages have developed in clearly connecting groups which, to me, constitute another form of layering. In this approach, I have found a story that is unfolding through distinctly different series, each one marking a small evolution in my personal life. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Vermont, Jennifer Protas is a multi-media artist living and working in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She received her MFA from Pratt Institute and her BA from the University of Vermont. Protas has received several grants from the Dutch Funds for Visual Arts (FBK) and from the Prins Bernhardfonds. In 1990, she was a selected participant in the Bronx Museum Artist in the Marketplace exhibition and seminar. She has exhibited extensively in the U.S. and Europe, from artist-run initiatives such as the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) and the Ridge Street Gallery to museums and international art fairs such as ARCO, Madrid, and the Chicago Int’l Art Fair. In 2002, Protas was the resident artist at RAID Projects in Los Angeles and at Foundation Elba, Nijmegen, in the Netherlands. Her solo exhibitions include DeSchoneKunsten Gallery in Haarlem, and the Museum for Science and Technology (NEMO) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She has been a guest teacher at the Willem de Kooning Academy for the Arts in Rotterdam and the Royal Academy for Visual Art in The Hague. In 2015 she co-founded the Newest Art Organization based in Amsterdam, a cultural platform for non-Dutch artists and artisans in need. Protas is currently at work on a series of collages and illustrations for a graphic memoir.
