American, b. 1977 — Jen P. Harris (she/they) is a Los Angeles-based artist whose multifaceted practice combines drawing, painting, cutting, and collage to explore the potential of materially “unmaking” the knowledge and stories that underpin Western concepts of humanity. Mining the visual culture of the past, she absorbs and collapses multiple source images and perspectives into shifting fields of shapes, likenesses, marks and color, developing compositions that simultaneously focus and expand the viewer’s attention. Harris holds a B.A. from Yale and an M.F.A. from Queens College of the City University of New York. She is a recipient of a 2012 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting, and grants from the Puffin Foundation, Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, and Iowa Arts Council. Jen’s paintings and installations have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States, recently in a solo show at Edgar Gallery in downtown Los Angeles in 2020. The New York Times, Guernica Magazine, CultureCatch, and The Philadelphia Inquirer have featured her work.
