Artist James Stephens

James Stephens

Chicago, USA

American,   —   Artfare artist James Stephens is a painter and sculptor based in Chicago. His invented interiors and landscapes are inspired by the detritus found in blighted parts of Midwestern cities. Beginning from imagination, memories or everyday observation, each element of his compositions are a result of conscious and subconscious decisions made during the painting process. The ideas for how the final painting will look arrive and depart over many configurations. In this way he allows for the piece to come to life fluidly. Often these spaces and the objects that fill them reference technology, earth science and art history. The end result being a vague personal narrative. Since receiving a B.F.A. from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit he has exhibited his work throughout the Midwest. In 2007 he had a mid-career retrospective at Oakland University. More recently he was part of a four person show at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work can be found in many public and private collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University and the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.
