Erik Hougen’s artwork meditates on the collective conscience of the American experience. He uses a combination of silkscreen, painting, digital printing and watercolor in his works, typically in photorealistic style. Scenes of absence and reflection reference his childhood memories, the supernatural, dreams, and depict the seemingly familiar. Hougen was born in Bismarck, ND in 1982, currently lives in Maplewood, NJ and works in New York City. He holds a BFA from Minnesota State University Moorhead and a MFA from Pratt Institute. He participated in the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program at the Bronx Museum, and was a SIP Fellow at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. Hougen’s work has been exhibited at Bronx Museum, Montclair Museum, the International Print Center of New York, Planthouse, Foxy Production, and Kunsthalle Galapagos in Brooklyn. Hougen was a finalist in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. in 2013.
