Artist Ellen Jong

Ellen Jong

Los Angeles, CA, USA

American, b. 1976   —   Ellen Jong is a multi-disciplinary artist recognized for using utilitarian material to reflect on dynamic personal and collective notions of identity. Technology, traditional and unconventional art practice, and applied craft are used to compose her conceptual works. Process is integral and a means through which she can tackle her relationship with self while considering feminism, formalism and fiction. Her recent work reinvents an ancient and traditional method of ink-making from 12th Century BC China and reclaims the material from her childhood and heritage. Jong says, “I need to go backwards a little to move forward. It’s like a time machine. Made with animal by-product, it is organic – alive and decaying – so working with it demands an acute kind of attention and elasticity. There’s potential with more room for error. I manipulate it but I can’t control it.” Jong was born in Queens, NY and lives in Los Angeles.
