American b. 1974   —   Elizabeth Gilfilen is a visual artist based in New York. Her works on paper and canvas are rooted in the language of gestural abstraction and range from sparse and elemental to chaotic and turbulent. Intimately tied to the hand, searching lines are often paired with broad washes of color to build exploratory structures. Her work has been include in exhibitions at venues such as Reynolds Gallery (Richmond, VA), The Hunterdon Art Museum, (Clinton, NJ), Morgan Lehman Gallery (New York, NY), Kathryn Markel Fine Arts (New York, NY), the Bronx Museum if the Arts (Bronx, NY) and TWFineArt (Brisbane, Australia). Her work has been covered in publications including ArtSpiel, Two Coats of Paint, New American Paintings, The New Criterion, The Boston Globe, The Newark Star-Ledger and The New York Times. Awards and residencies include The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, Yaddo and The Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop SIP Fellowship; among others. She received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and her BFA from the University of Cincinnati.
