Artist Duy Hoàng

Duy Hoàng

New York, NY, USA

Duy Hoàng is an interdisciplinary artist born in Vietnam in 1989 and is currently residing in New York City. He received an MFA from Columbia University in 2017. At a young age, the transition of moving to the U.S. demanded his need for intensive observation and awareness, in order to comprehend the new foreign habitat. Hoàng's practice focuses on our relationship to the minutia around us, in connection to the much larger environment we are inherently a part of, while searching for our placement within that spectrum. With this desire for attentiveness, Hoàng accumulates found objects/natural materials from the surrounding site that are usually overlooked, then applying observational processes ranging from drawings, prints, to photos, videos, etc., to form site-responsive installations. This practice grows into a ‘nesting’ process, which embodies an obsessive impulse to continually search for 'home,' a place to belong. Some notable exhibition sites: Kleine Humboldt Galerie, Berlin / Thomas Erben Gallery, NY / Royal Geographical Society Pavilion, London / Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina, Serbia / Cahoon Museum of American Art, MA / Lorber Family Gallery, Israel / The Columbus Museum, GA / etc. And some residencies: Mildred's Lane, PA / La Becque, Switzerland / ISCP, NY / A-Z West, CA / Mass MoCA, MA / Rabbit Island, MI / Wave Hill, NY / Tropical Lab, Singapore / etc.
