About

American,   —   “My practice, at the intersection of art, science and the environment, is fueled by the urgency of climate change’s threat. Using images rather than words I communicate how the world is suffering dramatically from extreme weather disasters such as flooding, heat, drought. Rather than apocalyptical, I endeavor to bring beauty into the conversation, reminding us all of the magic of the natural world. My inclination is to witness, translate, and communicate scientific information through my work - that is how I personally and professionally counter climate doubt – it’s my way of entering the public discourse with the goal of moving the viewer to reflect, take responsibility and act. I like to call myself a “subversive artist”.” “Bearing Witness” has taken Burko to the Arctic, Antarctic, and Pacific which augment her ongoing study of the natural world inspiring studio production, resulting in over 100 exhibitions throughout the country. Burko’s work can be found in such institutions as The Art Institute of Chicago, Denver Art Museum, Hood Museum, Michener Art Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, National Academy of Sciences, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Zimmerli Museum. Her most recent exhibition, SEEING CLIMATE CHANGE, at the American University Museum was cited by the New York Times as one of the Best Shows of 2021. Born in Brooklyn, she now resides in Philadelphia and Bucks County, PA. She graduated Skidmore College with a B.S. in art history and painting, then earned an MFA in painting at the University of Pennsylvania. Burko is Professor Emerita from Community College of Philadelphia and has also taught at Princeton University, ASU, and PAFA. She has been awarded residences in Giverny France, the Rockefeller Conference and Study Center at Bellagio, Italy and in Svalbard by the Arctic Circle.org group and in American Samoa by Kai’Apapa. She has received 2 NEA Artists grants, 2 PA Council on the Arts Grants, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the WCA/CAA, an Independence Foundation award and the Fleisher Art Memorial Founders award in 2019.
