American, b. 1970 — Cynthia Reynolds is a Kentucky-born, New York-based visual artist. Her current practice is fueled by the discarded packing materials she collects on the sidewalks of the city. She uses them as physical and conceptual framing devices in her sculptures and installations, exploring their surfaces, shapes, structures, and voids by altering them, building with them, or molding and casting them in art materials. She is interested in creating encounters that examine the value and mutability of space, the beauty and hazard of fragility, and the permeable boundary that separates empty from filled. Ms. Reynolds holds an MFA from the University of Washington in Seattle, a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, and a BA from Centre College. While living in Kentucky, she was an artist in residence at Louisville Stoneware and was a member of ENID: Generations of Women Sculptors. She received funding awards from the Kentucky Arts Council and the Kentucky Foundation for Women. She made her curatorial debut in 2020 with "what we create may save us," a group exhibition that included pieces by 18 artists, most of whom are based in New York. Her work has been shown across the US.
