Canadian, b. 1970 — Christopher Griffith is an artist based in the Hudson Valley who worked in photography for 20 years. Originally trained as a research biochemist, Griffith left a Ph.D program at University College London to pursue fashion photography in the late 1990’s. He has published 3 monographs in photography. (STATES-2001, FALL-2004, BLOWN-2009) In 2017 he relocated to his renovated dutch barn on the Hudson to pursue purely artistic endeavors. His work has largely explored language and how words can be manipulated in social interaction. In 2019, he showcased IN MEMORIAM, a series of unconventional large scale funeral flower motifs at the ECC group show during the Venice Biennale. In 2019, Griffith focused his practice primarily to large scale graphic paintings. The series HOBOGLYPH, 2020 employs a secret code of graphic motifs that date back to the aftermath of the American Civil war. The recent series FOURPLAY, 2021 is a veiled graphic exploration of 4 letter words. Inspired by the work of word artists Wool, Indiana and Bochner, but with a graphic language reminiscent of Kelly, Riley and Herrera. It's part pop, part abstraction, part commentary. He is self taught.
