Chris Duncan

Schenectady, NY, USA

American,   —   Born 1952, New York City Works in Schenectady, New York and Alna, Maine Chris Duncan has a studio-based practice making sculpture and works on paper. The sculpture is constructed, hand built and mostly low-tech, assembled from parts, using paper, cardboard and other materials. The forms often start from the ground and move upward. The work emphasizes the process of making, with torn and cut edges and visible hardware located casually throughout. Sometimes they’re finished with epoxy, so they can be glossy, industrial, and brightly colored, or raw and exposed. His work on paper explores similar methods, stressing materiality, layering line and color to build an active but cohesive image. Duncan works and re-work materials and images looking for a structure that’s visually satisfying, faceted, and open to different meanings. These sculptures and drawings are intended to encompass and perhaps evoke feelings, sensations, memories. They value a certain tension between the raw and the cooked. There is an immediacy in the working process that allows for response to the way a work looks and feels; to qualities of gravity, balance, and surface that make sense visually, physically and emotionally. The work embraces both rationality and passion, structure and gesture. And in the end it should include some surprises. Chris Duncan has received Guggenheim and Pollock-Krasner fellowships and has exhibited widely nationally and internationally. His work is in museum and private collections in the United States, Germany and England. He is the Baker Professor of Visual Arts at Union College in Schenectady, New York.
