C. Dimitri

Pawtucket, RI, USA

In art there is the quality of the intangible, the thing that cannot be explained. Federico Lorca called it duende, saying it is a power that “springs out of energetic instinct.” The intangible features prominently in Dimitri’s work. His process isn’t chaotic but it has a logic of its own. It’s a restless exploration of composition, depth, and movement, among others. -Buck McCoy At 18, Dimitri moved California to work as an artist and then, later, to Europe to study. He returned to Providence in his early 30s to focus on painting. He has received fellowships in painting from the Vermont Studio Center and the RI State Council on the Arts. A staff illustrator for The Rumpus, he has illustrated texts and book covers and has added drawings to the Kenyon Review, Bomb Magazine, and the streets of Providence. Two of his climate-change graph paintings are in the permanent collection of the Boston Public Library. Solo exhibitions include the Tabla Rasa Gallery (Brooklyn), Aurora (Providence), and Crocker & Griffin (Narragansett), with select exhibits at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and Brooklyn's Irondale Theater, Greenpoint, and Groundfloor galleries. He has also shown in Miami, Provincetown, and Los Angeles.
