Magazines are the source material I used in this photographic series. I was exploring and questioning the construction of a generic image of beauty in a surrounding based on appearance and generic identities. In fashion magazines, faces tend to look similar, toward a glamorous self and a floating notion of sexual identity. This negation of individual singularities drove me to cut the eyes and mouth from the faces in magazines’ pages. These, by losing the remnant of their visible identity, open their face to the inner world. By cutting and excavating the pages some other images were emerging, the holes in the pages from my cutouts were overlapping and creating layered images. Cutting, tearing, looking at the images, and then taking photos of these disquieting compositions was an invitation to look beyond the surface, question our way of seeing, and enter the multilayered world we are in. I used my iPhone to take the pictures; it was a direct way to grab the image before its disappearance once turning the page. I don’t use Photoshop; I like to see the grain of the picture, the cut of the blade, the nature of the paper. These details hold the vocabulary of the work, a response to our world of appearance.
