SARAH COOTE : Sexy Schoolgals, 2020

These paintings combine unlikely yet familiar scenes and they are inspired by dreams, fantasy and personal experience. I am always considering the delicate role of submission and dominance in fantasy with the contrast of this relationship playing out in controlled environments such as a dog park, a classroom, recorded history and marketing tactics. I am interested in the role of how capitalism and media have become our teachers and how one may unlearn their subjugation through playful interventions of images. I'm using the paintings to express scenarios similar to theater or tarot cards as a way to understand their failures and playful outcomes. In my mind each painting operates within a library of symbols, and as the work continues those symbols overlap.
