Black Grid 20.05, 2020

10 unique prints assembled on 13.5”x 11’5” archival board Ink on Red River Palo Duro SoftGloss Rag Edition 1/1 Black Grid was developed as a natural off shoot of my main project Residual Ink Drawings. Using the configuration of the grid -a long-standing metaphor for stability and order- I consider qualities of balance while seeking order amid randomness. I play with the grid and its structuring armature to display a kind of controlled anxiety while attempting to expose the inherit contradictions of doing so. To make these pictures I use a printmaker’s brayer to apply reclaimed black ink from discarded ink jet cartridges directly onto photo gloss paper. These original hand-made pictures or drawings are then reproduced using digital technologies and an inkjet printer. The resulting photographs are then assembled along with the original source picture in a grid, considering a system which varies from work to work. The copy is never perfect and when placed beside the original, the slippage becomes apparent. I invite the viewer to examine the difference between the sensibility of touch and that which is derived from pixels and codes.
