Blue Octopus, 2020

This painting is made with watercolor, tempera, pastel, magic marker on aquaboard. It reflects my interest in Symbolist art, particularly the work of Odilon Redon. The work references the discovery of a giant squid that was caught on camera in the deep sea. I combined this subject with an actual vase made of blue and green glass with a bubble like surface. This work, and others like it, incorporate transparency, iridescence, and dramatic color contrasts, and feature animals, insects, earth, air, fire and water and elevate the natural world to an almost spiritual status. I envision my recent still life paintings as beacons of hope, imagination and empathy in the midst of politically fraught times.
