Gorky with cactus, 2020

This painting was made with watercolor, oil pastel and oil on aquaboard. It has an allover web of activity combining figurative, mediated and abstract sources. The background comes from a book cover on the work of Abstract Expressionist painter Arshile Gorky that I saw in a friend's painting studio. I took a photo and reproduced it here. Gorky's serpentine and sharp forms reminded me of a cactus I had seen recently in the supermarket with little orange flowering buds. I placed these things together into a still life composition with an overload of surface activity.
