Patrick Winfield Vogel, neo-confederate, 2021

c-print; unlimited edition; This is part of the gallery's submission for NADA House 2021 as a fundraiser for the travel/lodging expenses for the artist/gallery. Vogel states, “The initial extractive modus operandi brought to this island (in the harvesting of various forms of energy from the earth, pelts, trees, fish, minerals, etc) ignored an already rich complexity of human/non-human relationships that predate European arrival. Recorded practices point to it as a strategic center for the harbor of New York, where anthropogenic change has been inflicted and written upon the rocks. Through observation, subtle gestures and photographs I aim to make visible multispecies relationships which could constitute an alternative narrative for what the island is or could be. My ecocritical research-based approach will culminate in a presentation of the work and documentation of my near invisible presence, either virtually or in person, done both on and off Governors Island.”
