oil on canvas. Of this series, Maynard states that "The Serenity series seeks to interrogate and appropriate the power of images. In the Serenity series black men and women are painted in side profiles, which were inspired by the idea of mugshots. Mugshots have historically been used to profile criminals and people in society who engaged in wrongdoing. However, mugshots have also played a role in the dehumanization of its subject, and this was particularly prevalent during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Mugshots hold strong and negative symbolic power when black faces are presented through the lens of that form of portraiture. The Serenity project aims to take that negative style of portraiture and use the same style to show black men and women in a more graceful and majestic style. In re-appropriating the use of the mugshot, the Serenity series seeks to flip the narrative on how portraiture can be used, even when it has a negative connotation and history."
