Two Black Women In A Still Life, 2020

Photographs from "Xpressions: Black Beauty Still Lifes" explore the social, historical, and commercial past for its influence on black female identity. Brown’s work positions black cultural ephemera as central subjects within her still lifes about African American beauty. Her practice consists of collecting an assortment of beautification devices, books, ads, and homewares dating from the mid-century period onward, to be captured by the camera within arranged table-top sets. She challenges the shortfalls of the still life tradition, a genre that historically omits facets of black life and the narratives of women, by picturing black female subjectivity before her lens. Edition of 3.
