Exhibition History: To Assemble, NARS Foundation, Brooklyn, NY 2020 About the Series: “The technical system, the universal tendency that it carries, are no longer the partners of the ‘other systems’; the technical object lays down the law that is its own, it affirms an auto-nomy with regard to which, in the industrial age, the other layers of society must regulate themselves, with an actual possibility of negotiation. The indetermination of uses may well leave open possibilities for adjustments to the "system of objects," but at bottom the object bestows the horizon of all possibilities, essentially preceding the fixation of uses.” Bernard Stiegler, Technics and Time pg. 72-74 Technics reworks found photographs of machinery. New machines are constructed through a meticulous photo-montage process that brings together wires, chipboards, and other elements of technical equipment. Photographs of real world equipment are reimagined alongside fictional machines. Working with negatives retouched by an anonymous photographer, hand painted masks take on a new function as I reveal what they initially concealed. The resulting photographs evoke the essence of a technological system that serves as a precursor to those that dominate our lives. Using tropes of modernist black and white photography in conjunction with contemporary methods of digital post production, Technics contemplates the idea of perpetual advancement.
