Fog Veil, 2019

Taking the loaded history of painting as a point of departure, my current work begins with weaving my own canvases. This patient labor both creates fields for expression and puts to service a practice that has been used for thousands of years to build supports and foundations that are largely invisible in daily life. I’m using cottons, linens, and metals that, for me, evoke the body and life processes. I think of these materials as living, organic things- like flesh and bone. Building forms that nod to minimalism, to summits, or to grids marking time, my work references the heyday of modernist and post-modern painting while also subverting the gendered conventions of art making by using weaving as a meditation on labor and a painting tool.
