Description

Taking the history of painting as a point of departure, my work begins with weaving my own canvases. Being academically trained as a painter but self-taught as a weaver, I use the experience honed in painting to bridge ideas and to experiment in weaving, working freehand with the weft on a floor loom in a manner of direct painting. Building forms that nod to minimalism, summits, or to grids marking time, the work references the heyday of modernist painting while subverting the gendered conventions of art making. I use cottons, linens, paint, and metals, approaching the materials as living, organic things. This patient labor creates fields for expression while joining a practice that has been used across cultures for thousands of years.
