"Renatured (Disentanglement)" is a series of stills from "Disentanglement", a video sculpture commissioned for the 2021 Bruges Triennial with the timely them of “TraumA”. The images were created with molecular visualization software and 3D models of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus spike proteins, ACE2 human cell receptors and llama nanobodies. The coloring of the animations is drawn from Flemish Primitive paintings in the Musea Brugge collection where "Disentanglement" is currently installed for the Triennial. The series of limited edition prints is available exclusively on Artfare until the close of the Triennial on October 24th. Laura Splan’s "Disentanglement" in the 2021 Bruges Triennial: About "Disentanglement": “My work attempts to evoke a “biomedical imaginary” with provocations of curiosity and wonder. I try to create spaces for psychologically charged liminal states of recognition and obfuscation that can feel both otherworldly and intimate. “Renatured (Disentanglement)” was inspired by my current intervention at Musea Brugge’s O.L.V. ter Potterie Museum for the 2021 Bruges Triennial with the timely theme of “TraumA”. I was inspired by the complex history of the Potterie whose hospital, established in the 13th century, once served plague victims. The location is rich with entanglements of the earthly and heavenly as a site that has offered medical healing as well as spiritual salvation for over 700 years. I’m always looking for ways to examine contemporary experiences of trauma with a historical lens on the cultural present.” ~Laura Splan, 2021
