Kleroterion Hand with slate and cork ground, 2018

I make layered, black-and-white photographs in which I photograph my body mimicking poses and gestures found in Greco-Roman ethnographic, art historical, and commercial images. In this work, I reevaluate how women’s bodies have been historically presented and consumed. I cut up, reconstruct and re-photograph these collaged compositions to strategically emphasize or disguise the evidence of my interventions, rendering the images as both whole and fragmented. The photographs complicate the legacy of the Western art historical canon, and they propose a messier standard of beauty: one that is mixed, eroded, and patched together. The Ancient Greek kleroterion was a randomization device used to appoint individuals to public office. The open hand is a gesture that could be read in many ways: to stop, to be counted, or to invite. Edition of 3 + 2 APs. This work is mounted to 3mm sintra, floated in a dark grey maple frame with museum glass, and fitted with a cleat. Available unframed ($2000).
