Emerald, 2020

acrylic and oil on wood I have developed a new technique of carving paint. I add 100s of layers of paint, over weeks of time to a rigid support. After the unique acrylic mixture has cured, I carve into the work using woodworking tools to create the lines and shapes. The ritual-like actions of carving are aggressive and require a lot of manual labor and muscle. Like any relief carving, I cannot go back. Once a mark is made, it stays. It is a lot about trusting the process. I plan meticulously though an accident or unplanned layer can change the piece drastically. It makes the work more precious and also heightens the intenseness of the process and really focuses my attention to each mark and each moment.
