The painting is part of the series Garden of Living Images, which was a site-specific installation, displayed at the Sunroom Project Space, Wave Hill, Bronx, New York (2018). My 'artificial garden' references hanging Chinese scrolls and the longing for an imagined territory, such as the fabled Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Interested in how gardens reflect the connections between nature and culture in Eastern and Western societies. I was inspired by nature and responded to the late-fall landscape of Wave Hill Public Garden at the Bronx, New York. In the process of working on the paintings I stripped nature down to its most abstract form. Using ink, enable me to find and express the balance between control and freedom, deliberation and the element of chance, by the liquid forms on the surface. The planned and precise work with the colored pencils contradicts the meditative nature of painting with ink and completes it. The light that penetrate through the transparent Mylar create colorful shapes and shadows that emerge within the space. Frontal and detail photos by Stan Nartenn, display photo by Stefan Hagen, courtesy of the Artist and Wave Hill.
