Vergine con bambino e San Giovanni Battista (dopo Sandro Botticelli), 2020

Cotton and wool tapestry handwoven on a digital jacquard loom. From the Magnificat Tapestries. With Magnificat, I consider the fallen glory of tapestry to re-orient holy images within a queer cosmology. The Magnificat tapestries remediate Italian Renaissance paintings of the Madonna and Child into jacquard woven tapestries that subvert authorship while complicating a 2,000-year-old cultural legacy. Appropriation, mutation, and decadence are manifested and further examined through Italian ethnic legacies and queer temporalities. Narratives of Italian immigrant Marian devotion are met with musings on drag to consider their overlap and opposition. Throughout this I engage queerness, ethnicity, and the sacred to imagine, and offer, a queer vision of grace.
