Intaglio printmaking has been an important part of Cesarine’s artistic practice since she first started creating. Some of her earliest etchings date back to her high school days when she started studying intaglio etching as well as screen printing and other forms of printmaking. Her more recent works often feature vibrant inks in hues of pink, orange, and red. Her etchings are inspired by women’s history and the female gaze, often taking as inspiration historical figures from mythology, philosophy, media, and literature. The “GIRLS” intaglio etching series is created with variations of line etching, soft ground, and aquatint etching on copper plates. The works celebrate the female form, re-appropriating silhouettes from vintage pin-up images and re-positioning them in natural environments as an act of female empowerment and sex-positive femininity. Each of Cesarine’s limited edition intaglios are hand-printed by the artist on cotton paper, and include ink and printing variations which make each work of the edition unique.
