Description
Ryals' work examines the enchantment of ornamentation and special effects and seeks to study the relationship between illusion and power. How does this relationship function on an individual level as well as in large encompassing systems such as capitalism and organized religion? Using dichotomies such as natural and artificial, trash and treasure, sacred and profane, physical and digital, and luxury and kitsch, she studies how manmade power and value are conveyed within our world. To pose questions about our contemporary human condition, she utilizes the visual language of culture by creating wearable bodysuits and masks, sculptures or "artifacts", lens-based work and installations.
