This particular piece carries so much emotional weight, because of both the year and the subject matter of the visual. Taken a year before the Covid outbreak, and the George Floyd riots - this photograph is a visual of peace and freedom. This was a 4th of July weekend in the Edgewater Neighborhood of Chicago's northside - where the residents were out in large numbers. These three boys were playing with smoke cans, and just the atmosphere they created with the smoke was so nostalgic and fantasical. The innocence and the carefree nature of the boys reminded me of summers from decades ago, where technology was not a thing. Just a previous period, where the moment was the focus, and the beloved memory for everyone involved for years to come.
