A Wide Area Where Three Rivers Gather, 2018

"A Wide Area Where Three Rivers Gather" is an installation that was done in Hokkaido, Japan. The work becomes a habitat that accumulates natural materials from the local environment there and portrays the process of observation and nesting. The found natural materials such as the chemically treated sedum weeds, pumice rocks, dried Shepherd’s Purse, native insects, etc., are collected from the surrounding site with their distinct characteristics, representing the site-specific nature of the work and the influences we have on our environment. The habitat grows and changes over the course of my stay there due to the on-going collection and natural process of material decay. This traditional Japanese room peers into the garden, resembling a solarium, where decaying materials seek refuge and being tended to for revitalization.
