Septal Nectary, 2017

“Septal Nectary” is a collection of native Singaporean flowers being displayed in an observational laboratory setting, conserving for studies while removing them from their natural habitat. The flowers are memoriam to my memories of the ones found in Vietnam, where I spent my childhood. They represent a familiarity of “home”, located in a foreign environment. Depicting the conservation mentality while restricting nature through human intervention, the rate of decay in the specimens is visibly observable over the course of the exhibition. Singapore, being a partially man-made island surrounded by more water than land like many other islands that makes up South East Asia, really captivated my interest in the site. It's a country with high initiative on nature preservation/incorporating into the skyrise spectacle, that seems somewhat far in the future, yet intentionally overgrown with greenery that appears to be a post-apocalyptic scenery.
