Here To There, 2017

My interactions with the surface of my paintings are are completely additive...the accrual of a range of experience and feeling as I work...a relationship between myself and painting. My paintings develop from repeated application of the paint in watercolor-thin layers. Each work takes its own course. There is no plan. Sometimes a wash is cascaded down the entire face of the painting. Other times I establish structure with flat housepainters’ brushes. And still other times I create marks in gestural strokes or via incidental means, such as allowing wet paintings to touch each other. The highly fluid nature of my approach sets up challenging dynamics of control and release. In the end I work to establish a charged state of balance...a sense of precarious stillness. I hope that my work activates a sense that you simply feel yourself seeing. I like to think of that kind of moment as clear, pure, innocent, and solitary...and fleeting.
