Waipi'o (acid wash), 2016

This landscape painting alludes to an early childhood spent on The Big Island in Hawaiʻi, and is inspired by the island’s palette. The work is a reflection of my appreciation for the beauty of the Waipiʻo Valley, the name of which translates to “curved water” from the Hawaiian language. The titles of my work sometimes allude to memory, place-names, and phenomena—the title in this case references a cultural predilection for acid wash jeans, popular in the 90’s when my parents moved from New York City to Hawaiʻi.
