Description

Materials: two-way reciprocal mirror, time manipulated flood light (6 seconds on, 6 seconds off), altered found object (road sign), steel Description: This piece is about the relationship between screens and the body. More specifically, the conflicting realities presented by technology, living life on-screen and off-screen simultaneously, and our relationship to the space we inhabit both in front of and behind-the-screen. This multimedia installation gives way to self-reflection, mirroring the feeling of physical disassociation and social detachment we experience online. Having both a dark sensibility and a subtly humorous sincerity, this kinetic sculpture, print, poetry, and time-based installation removes common objects, language, sounds, and symbols (i.e. traffic signs, building material, commercial prints, and technology) from their traditional contexts. This allows viewers to reconsider the ways these elements affect their emotional landscape and connection to others, speaking directly to the disconnect between the mind and the body. The work I am planning to exhibit stems from an installation I made last year that I plan to build on, making new additions to the lighting, the structure of the sculpture, and also through the addition of a new audio element. With this work's relationship to our behind-the-screen world and my use of repurposed roadside construction material, there is really no more ideal context than a TEDx conference drive through art exhibition in a parking deck. I feel this work would be extremely well-supported in this context and would love for it to be a part of this exhibition.
